I Wish I Was Out Of My Mind!

No, I really do. Ever since I missed what should have been an easy deadlift in my meet its been running through my head again and again. How? why? Likely mostly due to the fact I have not missed a DL PR in competition in over 4 years, so of course Im going to over analyze it and figure out what went wrong?

Was it the hip injury?

No it cant be. While yes being diagnosed with a degenerative hip , no cartilage left in half the cup, is not a positive its not a condition that happened over night and was that way likely just a few months ago when I pulled 725 for the first time and it didn’t stop me from opening at 700lbs easy.

Was it the hip and back tweak I got while benching?

This could be a factor I’m not sure. What happened, was due to my childhood injury that found my pelvic broken in 16 places and permanently externally rotated ( and also the bad hip side) my heel touched the bench and I got red flagged. So good thing I opened stupid light. I hade made the lift easy so I went ahead and went up but kept it conservative. I asked one of the crew working the meet to grab my leg and force it, pull it out to where my heel would not touch. It hurt when he did it by it wasn’t that bad and I was set, lift off, pause Press! Lightening shot up my hip and carried into my low back locking up right QL and left lumbar spine. I made the lift but it was Slow due to the pain and I was nearly stuck on the bench.

I had Jay work on my to get the cramping down and in a few minute I was seemingly Ok. Time passed and I was still able again to open with the easiest 700 of my life. Did that injury play a part in why I missed the 750 attempt. Yhea maybe sure it didn’t help was it why the bar flew to my knee and turned out to be the easiest Looking heavy PR attempt Ive had and then in-turn missed? Possibly

I however think upon looking back its due to the fact...

I didn’t lose my mind

I have this uncanny ability when it comes time to step on the platform to go mindless. I don’t feel see or hear anything that one would in there normal everyday life. Or that I feel and here even in the gym. I get in a guess what one could call the “zone” as people say. Its time for the rubber to hit the road. No thinking now is the time to act. Thinking is for training. Meets are for acting, putting all that thinking on auto pilot and just lift. I get tunnel vision, selective hearing, hair stands on end, electricity runs through you. All I know is Pick the bar up. Time runs in slow motion, seconds seem like minutes as I set up, get a breath, dip once, dip twice dip three time and PULL. I am always amazed looking back at the videos at how fast the set up actually is when it felt like hours.

I didn’t get there this day. I was there for the 700 and the result was expected. It felt like I could have cleaned it. Then I called 750 and the thinking began. Was my back ok, how's the hip, my mind running about the other athletes I was coaching. My normally blank mind was all over the place. It’s my turn. I approach the platform and I didn’t have that usual meet energy running through the surface of my skin and I was trying to create it. So I'm thinking about that. I'm thinking step up, grip, sit back, get tight. Long arms etc Blaa I was beat right there. You can read about this in an article I wrote earlier on this subject.

The Art of the Mindless Meat Head

I got beat at my own game and how?

I can only think it was due to just so many things out of whack. I’ve had meets in adversity before. I don’t know? Im not worried however it was an off day. I usually am very well at getting in that zone on command. I missed, no one bats 1000. I guess but it just reaffirms my prior article and as well this quote below by Dr. Allen Fox "Emotional Control" and tennis, as it fits like a glove.

“In a match, it's very necessary to maintain emotional control. And by "emotional control" I don't mean that you get angry or discouraged but that you just don't show it. By "emotional control," I mean two things:

One is, you don't have anger or discouragement or these emotions that hurt you.

And number two, you create emotions that are helpful to you, like aggression, and excitement, and optimism.

Now most people, their emotions tend to follow what's happening on the court. If they're playing badly, their emotions go down, and their game tends to follow. The great players don't let their emotions be determined by what's happening on the court— they use it, but they're trying to create the emotions themselves.

Maintaining emotional control is one of the keys to winning tennis matches.”

I create my own emotion. That’s what I didn’t after a long day with no food and running a charity event when I entered the meet last minute and pulled my first 725. That’s what Ive done in the past to break mine and others squat bench and DL records.

Come meet day you must create your own emotions, and you must let the physical body and unconscious mind take control over the conscious mind. The conscious mind and body is to slow and weak. To the conscious mind 750lb weighs 750LBS!!!!!! The unconscious just knows the movement patterns you instill on it, and weight is weight. Its an emotionless number unlit hat simply must be lifted, just another bar so do what you know, pick it up!!

Lift For Hope 2010

Lift For Hope 2010

Hey all. I am happy to announce my planning for Lift For Hope 2010 will kick off hardcore this week. I have some exciting news this year including a revamped website and a whole new avenue for the money raised.

Lift for Hope is a 3rd annual Charity Strength Sports Event. This year's "Lift for Hope" again will be a one day NAHA sanctioned Highlander State Championship and APF sanctioned deadlift meet held in mid Oct to Early Nov in the Phoenix Az Metro Area.

In 2010 I have decided to take the charities giving's in a new direction. In the two previous years I used the event to raise money for first an American Cancer Society camp for children, then last year The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Az. This year I am changing the focus to a by strength athletes, for strength athletes event. Proceeds raised will support strength athletes that compete on the international level for the United States Of America.

It's amazing that we still stand as very competitive in some of the sports with such a variance in the support received compared to our competition. There is no question as to why we are not more competitive, It boils right down to capital, to funding, and support or the lack there of. It is time we, we the fellow strength athletes, enthusiasts, the fitness, supplement, and training equipment industries as well as the general populations stand up and lend a hand to these athletes that shed blood sweat and tears to compete on the national level in our names.

That is what I intend to do this year with Lift For Hope 2010. The charitable profits raised will go to support three athletes that compete on the international level for our country. One Olympic Weight Lifter, one Power lifter, and one Thrower (Shot Put, hammer, or discus) will receive equal checks from Lift For Hope to help supplement the cost of their training and hard work in representing us. I will be announcing the athletes as early as next week.

Strength athletics in the USA, unlike our international counterparts, have become the unfunded evil steps sister to team athletics and other single athlete athletic events such as gymnastics, sprinting, and swimming. Heavy athletes as a whole have taken a huge hit in this day in age. Across the board the athletes put years of dedication, blood, sweat and tears in the hopes of bringing home gold for our country, with little to know accolades and recognition, let alone funding.

These athletes are scrapping by, training endless hours in our honor to shoot for a goal greater than most even dare to dream, all the while scrapping by on few peanuts and chicken soup, while working a part time job that will allow them to keep the training schedule that athletes around the globe, and even in their own country in other sports Don't have to worry about as they are funded and allowed to vent all of their energy into their training. It is time we the people lend a hand, to even our playing field for our hard training strength athletes.

It is also high time that strength athletic and charity merge. How many successful walks, Jogs, marathons do you see across the world. How many endurance based events do you know of that do a great job and get turn outs in the tens of thousands for causes. It's time for strength athletics to come out and be seen as well and show that we are a community of great and giving people. That is my aim to give strength athletes a way to give back and be seen for who we are.

At Lift For Hope 2010 men and women of all ages, weight classes, and experience levels, from beginner to expert, will again compete in the two competitions to support the charity, strength athletics, and to hold the title of State Champion. Beginners to advanced are welcome to participate. Last year's event saw 14 first time novice athletes, produced 16 New State records, and 3 national records including a 725lb raw deadlift by Lift for Hope founder and operator me. We hope for this kind of representation and more from novice and elite alike in 2010.

In addition to the competition the atmosphere as a whole is that of a family friendly event. There will also be, Music, food, massage, a raffle, demonstrations and more for the entire family to enjoy, Athletic enthusiast and not. I am looking to build on last year which saw 3 bands, one comedian, 2 food vendors, 3 massage therapists, Gifts and mascots for all, and more. Please spread the word, give what you can and please come join us to help grow this event, support strength athletics, and in turn your country.

More info to come in the very near future. Again please spread the word and if you know of any possible sponsors and or want to get involved yourself please email me at Phil@lift4hope.org and look for the new website which should be up very soon at www.lift4hope.org

Just getting rolling slow getting ready for training to kick in in a week and a half.

Threw weight over bar x a lot.

Squat to box 315 x 10, 10, 10 and 5

Thats it

*******
Oh I forgot to mention it. When I was doing the light DB presses monday I figured Id take the 70 and test out the right vs left arm. The right as suspected is still way behind from the biceps tendon tear and then the shoulder tear. Its further behind then I even thought.

I pressed out the DB's to the point the right couldnt go more then was able to hit another 15 easy reps with the left arm. I guess thats why when I push heavy loads it only feels hard on the right arm LOL. Ill be adding a set or two of Just Right arm DB Pressing on pressing days to try and get this slowly worked out.

Feb 13th 2010 Push Pull Meet

Well things didnt go as planned. It pisses me off a bit but like they say we learn 10 fold from any failure more then we do from success and I havent missed a DL PR in over 3 years. It was time and was very humbling. Its time to get back at it I need to be bigger, faster and stronger and that time begins NOW.

Bench went OK hip was hurting on set up and In was internally rotatetd due to the hip and that heal touched the bench which was a red light. but easy so I made another jump to an easy 365 they had one of the spotter grab my foot and crank my leg out to the side. It hurt like a son of a bitch but I made the lift harder then it should have been due to the pain in the hip which went straight up my back and seized my lower back but i got it. I denied the third to try and heal up for pulling./ got some work done and felt ok Opened with a stupid easy 700 that felt like 495 and went for my planned jump to 750. In hind sight with the injury I should have done my usual and went for a 5 lb PR of 730 and smoked it for a 2nd but all indications from training had me smoking 750 and then going for more. It was'nt there and its my fault. I got in my own head wasnt in the right mind set let my head get to me, Rushed it got out of position and I think do to the injury I wasnt able to grind on the lift. Ive never given up on a DL especially one that came off the floor this easy but I knew it wasnt there I couldnt pull on it. It got a bit in front of me and my back yesterday just I wasnt able to grind it out.

None the less great progress. 700 now is easy and I know I have more in me. its just back to the work table to get stronger faster and bigger. and above all healthy so I can express the strenght I have

I want to thank everyone, my training partner, friend etc for all the support. I will not disappoint

Man watching the video the morning after thats the easiest start of a heavy DL that I have mssed and wasnt able to grind out. Next time. Thanks to JR and the RIP team for another Great meet
