"High carbohydrate consumption causes raised
insulin and triggers an increase in cholesterol production in the liver,
makes the walls of blood vessels contract so blood pressure goes up and
stimulates the release of fats called triglycerides (linked to heart
disease)."
Finally more PH'd and profs are beginning to say this and not that dietary Fat and dietary Cholesterol are the sources of our problems.
an interesting read.

Interesting read as you say. That is why I try and eat a lot more protein than carbs, however I might have to look at how much "processed" carb I take in. If you consider the "paleo" diet information and the 250000 generations of Hunter/Gatherer lifestyle without an absolute guarantee of something to eat today and probably of a high reliance on protein foods over carbs of any sort then there is probably a lot of truth to this. If you also factor in that our ancestor's had a shorten life span because of hygiene and a few other personal care factors then would they quite possibly have lived to 75 - 90 years old quite comfortably if not for this issue. As it says in the article the major reason why life expectancy went up in the last 100 yrs was better sanitation and personal hygiene. So in reality have we actually got any better. If we were to go back 500,1000,5000 or even 50000 years would we still live to be 4 score and 8 (88) or not, even with todays knowledge. If not or we were to still live only for that long then that says there is something wrong with what we do today as it would mean we haven't really gone anywhere.
ReplyDeleteI have a couple opinions on this...
ReplyDelete1) I just don't buy that good, complex carbs are that bad for you - so I will continue eating oatmeal, ezekial bread, potatoes, etc. To be honest, I don't think these paleo-type diets are the holy grail... just another fad diet to excited about.
2) There's something to be said for quality of life... just because I live longer doesn't mean I've had a better life.
3) How relevant is this in humans? I could be extremely wrong - it just seems like whether or not I eat a potato tonight will be very insignificant in the overall scope of my life.
So eat your hamburger without a bun if you think you'll live longer - but we never know just how long we'll get.
I think you are both right in many ways. Josh I agree with you hugely on the quality of life thing. As I posted this I was sitting down to a huge bowl or cereal and then a huge plate of chowmein noodles as I need the energy and calories to hold weight let alone gain it for my goals. That's impossible when i am eating low carb etc. I can get damn lean and keep a lot of muscle but not get stronger and bigger really at all. Im not the type to want to exist to be 125 years old I would rather exists to be 50 or 60 but have lived 125 years worth of life in those years.
ReplyDeletethe does the work in humans as far as this gene etc is concerned I think your right to early to tell but they are pointing that way and hopefully at some point science will catch up
thats where its neat the science is catching up but very very slow, just look at the flack we as lifter have caught for years for eating to much protein which is going to kill us and ruin our kidneys and sap the calcium from our bones. Finally someone is doing a study that is proving that wrong. Dr Lowery has a long term study that thus far shows NO markers for damage in a large group of people who were eating a huge amount of protien on a daily basis for years.
Then there is the newer studies and evidence on low carb diets and how the eating of high amounts of protein and fats compared to carbs and the effect it has on making our blood levels correct themselves, halt metabolic syndrome and make us lose weight.
I do beleive there are people who can handle carbs more readily as well, the Asians compared to say the Unuit. The two are polar opposites and likely due to hundreds and thousands of years eating them
for me in particular I have had the best results with myself and my clients by keeping protein and fat stable and we adjust carbs to the goals.
In the ends science is great and we need more of it, especially when its science not funded by a company with interest in the outcome, but its always just theory basically its numbered based and not 100% this is true just this is true in most. We have to take it and find what works for the individual when the rubber hits the road and for our goals.
thats without even getting into sustainability of the population which I beleive 100% is why there has been for decades a push to eat grains. Its good everyone doesnt know and understand this. The main reason IMO that the food pyramid is the way it is is NOT due to health its sustainability. Honestly we as a people couldn't sustain the food resources if the whole of the population tried to eat meat, eggs and green veggies.
